Home-Based Independent Study Program

The Arcata School District is proud to offer
an innovative 4th-8th Grade Home-Based Independent Study Program.

Home-Based Independent Study is an alternative to classroom instruction consistent with the school district’s course of study, and is not an alternative curriculum.  It provides individual students with a choice of ways to acquire the values, skills, and knowledge all students should gain as verified by a written agreement. Independent Study (IS) is an instructional strategy that responds to an individual’s needs and style of learning. IS allows students to pursue their educational opportunities outside the classroom, yet within the framework of the educational requirements of the Arcata School District (ASD). Participation in IS is voluntary.

The 4th-8th Grade Home-Based Independent Study program is designed to support parents who choose to instruct their child or children at home. Parents provide direction and monitor student progress, and instructional strategies are responsive to the individual learning needs of the student. A credentialed instructor oversees and works closely with each parent to provide the appropriate educational materials, instructional support, and assessments. All curricular materials are ASD Board-approved and align with the core curriculum districtwide.
